Personal Computing Devices (PCDs)

Today we are all surrounded by many different types of computers and computer like devices. Some of theses devices are traditional desktop and notebook PCs, and some are modern devices like smartphones, tablets, smart TVs, and hybrid PCs. With all of theses new form-factors and device types, the term PC does not cover all of these computing devices. I feel a new term is needed. The new term PCD or Personal Computing Device more accurately covers all personal computers and device types.

When the idea of a personal computer was first introduced, many companies laughed including Hewlett-Packard (HP). Today HP is one of the largest Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) of PCs, and the term PC is vary common.

The term PC comes from the idea that at the time regular computers where still fairly massive and complex, and new smaller computers where being developed that where to be marketed toward consumers. These new smaller computers where given the term PC to indicate that these computers where small, personal, and for average people.

Now we have many different types of computers, and computer like devices. These computer like devices are still technically computers, and most of them are indeed personal; however are more personal than others.

I would like to introduce a term that covers both the traditional PC as well as other computer devices. The new term is PCD (Personal Computing Device). PCD just makes sense. All of these things (computers, smartphones, tablets etc...) are personal, they are all computers, and they are all devices. PCD covers all of these devices in a generic form.

PCD or "Personal Computing Device" more accurately describes all computing devices designed for personal use. I would like to see the term PCD become a widely accepted term when talking about all computing devices in a generic way, so that one doesn't have to say "Go to yourdomain.com on your PC, Tablet, or smartphone today" in order to cover all devices. With PCD one could now instead say "Go to yourdomain.com on your PCD today" and all devices are covered.
